TO: MRS. CAROLE TAYLOR / MRS. ART PHILLIPS,
March 30, 2013 In Memoriam: Former Vancouver Mayor Art Phillips,
Dear Mrs. Carole Taylor & Family,   My condolences. Former Vancouver Mayor Art Phillips is “Now is Just Away” in God Paradise in Heaven with his spirit shining upon you, with fondest memories lives in yours and our hearts forever valued treasure cherished.     I warmly vividly remember in my photographic memory and often “reflect/flash-back” of all the wonderful times I’ve had the honour to share with Art Phillips from the time he and colleagues started the “T.E.A.M.” for Mayor and Council..My visits in his Mayor’s office when former BC Premier Gordon Campbell then was his clerk in 1972. Mayor Art Phillips' 1st words to me, after he greeted and welcomed me & my dear beloved husband Dean Leung into his office, “what’s the status quo” !!  Ever since 1973 to this date whenever the words “status quo” comes up, immediately my warm thoughts of Mayor Art Phillips in his Mayor’s office!   By my patriotic goodwill and love of Vancouver, B.C. and Canada as a whole, immediately upon then Mayor Art Phillips announced ‘SAVE THE ORPHEUM’ .   I was in his Mayor’s office and ask me to be Co-Chairman “KICK-OFF-SAVE THE ORPHEUM FUND” as: double with 4672 Year of the Tiger Mandarin Ball-Save the Orpheum… Mayor Phillips enthusiastically approved of us two as Chair.. I immediately formed a womens' committee and within only 2 weeks able to fill with “wall to wall” with VIPS, dignitaries and Vancouverites. I created a most elaborate extraordinary program, menu, Ancient Chinese costume worn by Mayor Phillips, Aldermen/Councilor Jack Volrich, Gibson, & other Councillors paraded on the catwalk, and Joe Cohen, Joe Segal guest appearances: (see photos and below Courier News Clipping dated Feb. 7, 1974)   Quote: “Vancouver Courier February 7, 1974”: (see photos & news clippings) “The city’s Chinese community celebrated their New Year and struck a blow for “SAVE THE ORPHEUM FUND” (the 1st ) in one magnificent splash last week at the Top of the Mandarin Restaurant.  They called it the “4672 Year of the Tiger Mandarin Ball”- to SAVE THE ORPHEUM.  Receiving line duties were handled by “Captain Vancouver” HARVIE ROUKE, Ball Chairman MRS. DEAN. C.K. FAYE LEUNG and MAYOR ART PHILLIPS.             DELIGHTFUL CHINESE MAIDENS in traditional dress were part of the colorful fashion show: Mary Wong, and Sharon Chang, with Julie Chu and Donella Chong, in the background is “Emperor” Philip Nipp.  Some 750 persons attended and contributed more than $2,000 to the Orpheum Fund. “all put together within 2 weeks—“Eat your hearts out Junior League! ”…..unquote…Vancouver Courier…   A wonderful February 13, 1974 photo of Mayor Art Phillips in his brown suit held our 2 years old son in his little blue velvet suit and the Mayor worn a Hawaii orchid lei presented him by me and “Hawaii 5-0” Kam Fong Chun/Chin Ho Kelly-Jack Lord:book him Danno / Chin!” when I with dear husband Dean, Ken & delegates introduced my Hawaii 5-0 good friend met Mayor Phillips and Vancouver Fire Chief Stewart, Opens: ‘HAWAII 5-0's CHIN HO KELLY-KAM FONG entourage SHOW’ celebrated Chinese New Year here.  Everybody loves this photo of the young Mayor Phillips to this day asked for this photo as keepsake! (see photo)   And my husband Dean Leung, chairman & leader with me and our delegations started in 1959 we fought “Save Chinatown from Bulldozing & Expropriation includes Vancouver Downtown Block 61/Georgia & Granville Streets” stopped the freeway cut through Vancouver Chinatown and downtown to join Upper Level freeway. We fought with the City of Vancouver's George F. Fountain, Director of Planning, and Gerald Sutton Brown then City manager, We saved Chinatown and Vancouver Hearts.  Fought from 1959 onward for years succeeded City of Vancouver reneged/rescinded their vote for aforesaid. Thus, Dean, chairman and Faye’s Chinese delegation “won & stopped the Freeway” during Mayor Art Phillips’ tenure in 1972-73 officially completed stopped the other section of the freeway through Georgia Viaduct, after the City had already expropriated Hogan’s Alley, Union Laundry, other businesses and homes in the area.
In Remembrance then Hon. Ron Basford, MP, and Mayor Art Phillips’ leadership cleaned up the False Creek Industrial dirty water that also flowed with very dirty oil seeped into the edge of Columbia and Keefer Street then waterways (where I parked in our business in Chinatown) and of the Granville Island with CMHC, enable commenced new developments “as it is now”, another ‘laurel’ he had improved Vancouver to this day of a livable Vancouver!’  On behalf of all Vancouverites and tourists “Thanks Your Worship Mayor Art Phillips!”   Recent years I had brief visits with His Worship Mayor Art Phillips at the White Spot Restaurant by Georgia & Cardero Street, close to where he lived.   He sat at the counter end stool enjoyed his ‘Clubhouse sandwich’ lunch …Wife Carole Taylor was busy with her prominent work & activities…I also have photos with her as keepsake forever treasure and respectfully of her work well done.   So many happy joyous memories of the good times we had shared with Art Phillips flows out of me “In Remembrance” of the happy times throughout the decades…   As I am one of the Simon Fraser University Convocation Founders; on June 14, 2012 Convocation I congratulated Chancellor Carole Taylor, her SFU 1st Convocation…with warmest wishes to her dear husband Art Phillips with advise ‘lovingly hold hands’ enjoyment together is life greatest happiness, as I’m blessed was with my loving dear beloved husband Dean had enjoyed!!    God Bless Carole Taylor and Family…                           GOD BLESS HON.
