Chinese Veterans Pacific Unit 280,                                        September 2, 2012 Vancouver, B.C.
Dear Mr. President and all Chinese Gallantry Veterans,
Stories: Chinese Boys to Second World War.. Honor: The Chinese & All Veterans                                          And: In Memoriam: Dearly Departed Vets…

The Veterans fought for Canada Freedom!

                                                     AND:

Dean & Faye Leung fought for Chinese & Canada enriched and enhanced       economy developments, contributions MultiCulturalism & Goodwills to All…       Also opened doors made possible & bridged the Western & Chinese Society       “the best of East & West communities worlds! throughout WWll to date”

As I, Faye Leung have supported the Chinese Veterans throughout the many decades from my parents’ time when the Chinese Veterans were “Chinese Boys” were called to war as follows:
From the date announced by Canada Government during World War ll of the Canadian Caucasians in Canada that were qualified has gone off to war ..were short supply of the Caucasians men… that Canada Government opened: “to draft and to allow Chinese Boys enlist” to fight in the war…Even though the Chinese boys all born and raised in Canada are registered in their Canada birth certificates as “Chinese Nationals Only”..not as Canadians… We Chinese in Canada even born and raised here were not recognized  as Canadian Chinese.  Although we Chinese Canadians were very patriotic with integrity always done our best, worked hard, served and done as proves we’re honorable respectable citizens of Canada too.

I vividly distinctly remember in my photography memory then a young girl when the “Chinese boys were drafted” their parents emotionally distraught cried to my prominent academic parents were Community leaders and teachers, Leong Chap Kwong and Kate Nipp Leong were their confidantes, of their sons and daughters drafted off to fight in the war in risks their lives. And some of the Chinese young boys felt compelled to fight for Canada’s freedom enlisted volunteered patriotically.  Frank and Bing Wong’s mother Mrs. Wong Chew Pang with her daughter Francis Wong Lim/Mrs. Alfie Lim in tow, sat in our kitchen, where we lived behind Kwong Gee Chinese Public School our parents Founders and Teacher, in agony of her sons to war needed my mother supports.

My mother & father has supported the Chinese Veterans’ parents and with the Chinese Community strongly OPPOSED discriminated the Chinese Canadians as only Chinese Nationals were not recognized as Canadians yet wants the Chinese boys to go fight in the war as Canadians soldiers…The Chinese Community rallied opposed Canada Government drafted our “CHINESE BOYS” to war,.. supported our Chinese boys…’bloods, sweats, tears’ fought for Canada’s freedom not as a Canadians but as Chinese Nationals, without the privileges of chosen professions as were not allowed for the Chinese, discriminated, restricted with taboos not allowed to various areas, no rights to vote, no status at all !

=============================
August 9, 2013

In Memoriam: Gim Foon Wong, a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, HonoUrable Chinese Canadian Veteran, and friend..

Dear Mrs. Gim Wong Jan, Cyndi & Glen Muir, Donna & Guy Malthus, Jeffrey, Dina and Lisa, & sister Anne Loo, brothers Alan & Yvonne, and William, nieces and nephews..

My warmest thoughts is with you all as Gim is now “Just Away” in God’s Paradise in Heaven with his spirit lives forever shines upon you all…and his happy memories and laughing goodness lives in all our hearts valued, treasure and cherish forever!!

Gim was a very special and long time friend of my dear beloved husband Dean mine and I throughout the decades…We were real good friends as Gim himself wrote recently a letter I’ve received through the courtesy of Quan Lim sent me Gim’s handwritten letter that Gim stated in his letter of me and him (and sister Lily) long happy friendship since 1939s, when they were my prominent parents teacher Leong Chap Kwong & Kate’s students at Kwong Gee Chinese Public School at 320 E. Pender St by Gore corner.

Gim also said specially of the happy times we have had enjoyed always whenever he see me…“He sung the “Easter Parade” song to or with me. Because I’m known of my famous hats…and the “Easter Parade song”:…‘on your Easter Bonnet with all the frills a upon it you’ll be the grandest gal on 5th Ave. Easter Parade…(in New York from the famous movie Easter Parade every Easter repeated on TV were by renowned Fred Astaire, Jane Powell and Peter Lawford).  Gim said in his letter that the Easter Parade we duet at “In Honour Herbie Lim’s luncheon party at Queen Elizabeth Park's Four Season Restaurant”, he grabbed me and we improvised. He said ‘that only he and I could have ‘pulled it off!’ We have lovely photo of our duet. I’ve kept Gim’s letter so well I’ve spent days looking for it to send you a copy… I’ll forward when I find it as it’s a very precious letter from Gim’s heart of his memories with me and Dean.

I also have many, many photos of the parties at Gim and Lil’s home on East Hastings and from our various functions and events..Gim was always so proud with “pride and joy” he was still able to wear his Air Force uniform of the WWII that throughout the decades he can still wear it ‘spic and span’ with all his medals and same weight of almost 70 years to date!!

At all the events and functions Gim with his smiling face and kindness in “happy talks he greets and visit with me and Dean”…The enormous happy times we shared and enjoyed lives on as in my photographic memory I vividly distinctly fondly remembers as I vision each of the events Gim participated with Dean & I. That wherever the functions were at Gim would particularly seek me to talk a little of small talks etc he would repeats in Chinese too as we spoke often in Chinese!!

The aforesaid letter was Gim’s thank you letter to Quan Lim’s great journalist wrote and contributed the stories and news of Gim and the Vets to the Chinese newspapers and magazines here and in China various regions and villages…Gim’s letter spoke so much of being with me and Dean was a beautifully written and most interesting letter directly by Gim’s handwriting and of his previous illness and how well he was doing too. I’ve preserved his letter so well with my intention to write to thank Gim… time did not allow which I greatly regret I could not thank Gim personally…So to pay my respect to Gim at his memorial will gives me peace of mind…Gim was funny too in his unique own ways… and serious telling you of this and that was another of his great traits, no one can equaled his persona with personality plus gracious and charming gentleman with distinguish distinction!!

“In Memoriam: Gim Foon Wong” the hundreds of activities Gim joined Dean and I… included Dean & I formed the 1st Chinese Mixed Choir-as the Founders Mei Wun Choristers in 1950 Gim and Lil among the members. The Men is White Mandarin Jacket and the ladies in blue satin cheongsam with red trims specially made in Vancouver…China was not available then was in civil wars of Communist regime taboos….I was invited through my prominent parents by the Chinese Freemason of Vernon Chairman Wong Kuo Choy to participate by perform in celebration Vernon City’s Diamond Jubilee.. which I’ve done an elaborate Chinese Pageant with Gim, Lil and all the members of our mixed choir.

Its was the only one time in the world ever seen this great pageant was in Vernon, B.C. Diamond Jubilee Gala and never again (the script by Faye Leung are lost with Ina Dickjong Wong went to Heaven) “This true traditional Chinese old custom wedding of the ancient time in the ancestral village home was elegant, very elaborate, full ancient real parties performed by our group… acted out the wedding in the old traditional splendorous costumes, completed with the Chinese Traditional Wedding Altar with huge red Dragon and Phoenix wedding candles on silver pewter candles holders and pewter giant incense burner inlaid with gold double happiness Chinese character.  And Yoke Chu the matchmaker piggyback carried the Chinese resplendent wedding costume bride Mary Lee through the threshold…to the welcome groom John Lam, I was the mother-in-law and Dean was the father-in-law officially “bridal” kowtow tea ceremony.. Lil was one of bridesmaids! Gim in his part as follows below..Was a full story of the ancestral wedding I wrote, produced and directed into a real grand performance of the old traditional Honor the Chinese Custom Wedding… Gim and Lil were part of the group with our Choir members of 45 busload performed in Vernon Diamond Jubilee Celebration Gala evening in the summer of 1952..Famous Smokey Smith, Victoria Cross hero, the Mayor, Alderman Baker & Council and all the Government officials and newspapers and the public ‘laud and praised us’ of our casts excellent performance and historical storytelling act alive, and we were treated as true VIPs, that Gim never stopped talked about my and Dean’s leaderships made possible!

…Gim and boys as Archie Lew, Marshall Chow did a huge replica ‘B.B.Q Pig’ lay on the Chinese wooden tray (Gim et al made with paper mache & done the colouring too) a real true looking B.B.Q. Pig he took with us to Vernon. That Gim et al carried this B.B.Q. Pig Chinese style over his and Archie’s shoulders flung a bamboo rod strung robes of each side of the bamboo rod and hung the B.B.Q.Pig between cleverly Gim and Archie sway along dressed in their Chinese ancient men’s beige with black trim outfit with bounded trouser  legs was fits as the B.B.Q. Pig’s chef, Gim and Archie toddle on stage into the wedding ceremony with the amazing pig! It were truly wonderful performance and authentic from beginning to the end of the wedding, and our Choir sang many arias from “Chocolate Soldiers-“Oh What a beautiful morning” and Oklahoma etc… Gim would bellow out a song or two when we visited too throughout the years.  Gim was such a good sports always were asked to sing to the crowd or at a party and he would graciously and proudly happily sung without music!! Bless Gim’s beautiful happy soul!!

The many decades of happy parties at Gim’s parents’ home on East Hastings where they moved from Chinatown when its was politically incorrect for the Chinese to purchase homes to lives outside of Chinatown… I knew Gims’ parents, siblings well, his mother would assisted the gals prepared the food for the parties in their home…I can still envision today how Lil with Anne Lew her best friend cut the hard boil eggs in half and plaster with mayonnaise while Dean & I sat and talked with Gim… Gim said “let them do the work, we visit is more fun, with his wide grin as he pointed into the kitchen!!”

Gim was my/our “I called him the “Doctor of Auto Mechanic” as he in many decades cared for our automobiles he service in his Chinatown Garage and we were his loyal faithful client.. until he sold to Percy and Jack Hoy as National Garage whose continued cared our cars! Recently I told him I still have our 1986 low mileages of 55,000 Cadillac Elegante automobile park in the garage..He said ‘its worth a million now’! Gim in his work coverall marked with black grease happily tinker the parts here and there, Viola, our car is in ‘tip top shape’ by Gim’s magic touch!! We just love Gim and his wonderful workmanship and thoughtful kindness with greatest humanity are part of his greatness!!

Gim & siblings and his parents memorable stories “just flows out of me” instantly of the many decades of happiness since 1939, eh…  And of his marriage to Jan, his wife, he decided to meet in Hong Kong…. Chinese old Adage: “Marriage made in Heaven” .
.His sister Anne Loo’s daughter is Madam Justice Linda Loo Supreme Court of B.C. Honourable Judge I recently visited briefly with her talk of Gim and her mother Anne & father Wing Loo my good friends!!

Gim’s father for years was at our office Pender Realty & Insurance Agency at 156 East Pender daily, next 2 doors from Herb’s father Wing Lung Chinese food Merchandises. Our office was with a social corner for the pioneers comes to read the Chinese newspapers and visits… that Gim’s father loves to come to our office, was his daily trip to Chinatown.  When my 2nd son was born, Gim’s father wrote a poem as he was a poet, he had the Chinese Shop across the street Mr. Yee wrote in Chinese calligraphy on large red silk and  framed it in a large frame with his poem in Honour our new baby son after 15 years from our 1st son… Gim’s father was so happy for us he proudly had to sent his poem gift. …I still treasure his thoughtful gift remembers him with his cane in his grey 3 piece suit trod about talking lots… Gim also was most wonderful gentleman also talks lots of stories too… Gim and Lil were surprise of his father always was in our office, as Gim & sibling did not know of his daily Chinatown trip was to our office social life, except Sundays we were closed!!

Gim’s mother was so gentle and kind as I still hear her called me in Chinese respectfully titled too…She was a proud homemaker as all Chinese wives were then at home raised a good family with pride and joy!! Lil met Dick Fong in our Mei Wun Choristers weekly practices, as we were a happy bunch in the Choir.  We have had many happy outings, Grouse Mountain in freezing January weather in 1950 even we all don’t ski, then the Chinese families were not allowed to have leisure .. all work, we were workers at one or another, until we groups of young Chinese made a point gotten together to picnics and we were at the beach as guests of Vernon, B.C. And at Lil and Dick’s home party Gim and all of us attended have had much fun, no matter which decades, its as if time never passed, its all seems just like yesterday!!

So many memories ‘flashed-back’ as I reflected of all the lovely ‘black and white’ and colour photos of all the gals and guys great friendship social functions, events, banquets, etc. etc. with Gim and Lil are precious…  And all the newspapers clippings of Gim’s photo of his bravery motorcycle to Ottawa with son at his side he told me of his adventure of the Chinese Head Tax Redress a Mission Accomplished!! And for the good of the Chinese folks he personally single handed done are forever in the history of Canada and the Chinese Gim a true Hero…  when we all suffered horrific discriminations restrictions and taboos…Another story another time.

Gim is aware of my upcoming 3 storytelling books (see prelude little of the insights in my website) that also feature a chapter of Gim, Lil, parents and his siblings and Gim’s mechanic business in Chinatown etc always serviced and delivery on time… the stories you all may don’t know of, as it was a time of youth and aspirations we fought and won freedom!!

Please do take good care of yourselves as Gim would want you to do…  My condolence to all of you … God Bless you All…

God Bless Gim’s Joyful Brilliant Soul
God Bless Gim Foon Wong
Forever loved and Forever Remembered
Rest in Peace Gim Foon Wong

Our fond thoughts is with you all, and love of Gim forever appreciated with zillions of thanks Gim!!

One of the Chinese Community most important social annual event of the years as the Chinese Veterans Chinese Christmas Formal Ball held on Christmas Day then at PNE Happyland huge Ballroom until this ballroom was torn down to build the Empire Stadium as the home of the Lions Football Games…Then Chinese Veterans Chinese Christmas Dances changed to Hotel Georgia, Hotel Vancouver ballrooms ….Later years when the Vets married has families the Christmas Dances changed to December 26th on Boxing Day.  Boxing Day was solemnly honored as Christmas Festival visiting friends homes on Boxing Day drinks and snacks. Now the annual Chinese Veterans Christmas Party is luncheon through the courtesy of Chaplain Wesley Lowe and Pastor Bill & Miriam Lee’s home 1299 West King Edward Ave.  Bless them!!

I treasure cherish dearly the memories of the 1950 Christmas Chinese Veterans’ Ball with “my very extra-special beau Dean Chun Kwong Leung” in his black tux, me in my sky-blue lace mandarin collar peplum bodice layers blue & pink nets ball gown, we swirled & twirled quick waltzed around the ballroom to the Blue Danube, we danced into more than 43 years together lovingly respectfully admired as prominently couple cheek-to-cheek “romantically perfecto” danced Tangos, Rumbas, Sambas, Cha Cha, Flamingo, Bosa Nova, twists, rocks, fox trots, show waltz to the lyrics “Always” “I Love You Truly” to the admirations of the dancers often copied never equaled Dean’s exclusively created his own fancy dance choreography dance steps…Thanks God I’m blessed joyfully danced.

Regretted Pacific Unit 280 Association did not have the Government grants Veterans Legions Buildings that dear husband Dean Chun Kwong Leung encouraged the Chinese Vets for a Chinese Veterans Legion to own a building as the home and premises for its activities…sadly a great loss of opportunity for a ‘would-be asset’. Because as the Chinese Veterans stated: Quote & unquote: “Canadian Government then ‘discrimination’ severely against the Chinese continued from the “1882 Immigration” and “1922 Chinese Exclusion Acts” denied the Chinese Veterans for a Chinese Veterans Legion, as there’s many throughout other Units Districts Caucasians Veterans Legions own their Veterans Legions in Vancouver, British Columbia & Canada by Canada Government Grants approved

Since as a teenager the Chinese Community bestowed me as ‘Ambassador-at-large’ fought for the Chinese equalities in all the areas, as restricted, taboos, discriminated, as aforesaid and in employments, leases, rentals, housings etc and fought to removed the restricted residential & commercial properties registered on Land Titles “NO CHINESE/ORIENTALS, EAST INDIANS & JEWS” were NOT allow to purchase the properties, included the Chinese Cultural Centre land.  And I have fought throughout the decades for the Chinese in many civic bylaws and Provincial and Canada Government’s laws restricted the Chinese and East Indians, among others, as women’s equalities, I was first with 4 women invited joined Board of Trade with Grace McCarthy, Grace McInnis, Wendy Macdonald, Teresa Galloway. All as done are betterment life for all in Canada!

Dean & I have also greatly contributed culturally as well besides has redeveloped & expanded Chinatown and enhanced Chinese Community unique colorful characters & tourisms and economic developments etc enriched & benefit Canada.  I originally decades ago has blended & formed 1st Chinese ladies and men Mei Wun Choristers participated in Multi-Culturalism, in the original Folks Festivals with multi-ethnics communities into various activities.. The former Premier Dave Barrett few years ago at my good friend former House Speaker and MLA of 29 years Hon. Gordon Dowding’s wake asked me Quote: ‘do I know who made possible the Chinese Cultural Centre?”… unquote: ex-Premier Barrett.. I replied; ‘my husband Dean Leung named Chinese Cultural Centre and Dean was chairman as the leader he had led all the Chinese Associations & Organizations approved built the Chinese Cultural Centre after you/Premier Dave Barrett instructed Hon. Alex MacDonald then attorney general removed the registered Land Titles restrictions of “No Oriental, East Indians & Jews” that were not allow to purchase and own the lands/properties…

Former Premier Barrett told me then to tell Jenny Kwan, MLA be on a soap box to loudly announced that was only within 2 weeks he in government in 1972, he instructed “as he pointed at Alex Macdonald” who sat next to him, removed the restrictions, then for a dollar, given the land to build the Chinese Cultural Centre!!  On April 14, 2012 at former Councillor Jim Green’s memorial at the Orpheum Theatre I told Jenny Kwan of Ex-Premier Barrett as he instructed as aforesaid, Jenny Kwan said she did not know of at all!!  Thus CCC built has facilities for the Chinese Military Museum and In Honor the Chinese veterans a black quartz wall engraved all the Chinese veterans names listed in appreciation.
I have initiated & instrumentals many various immigration programs benefitted the influx masses immigrants to Canada reaped the benefits we Chinese, the vets, and the pioneers have sacrificed and toiled in developed the beneficial programs… And I have brought in billions of billion dollars to Canada (include recently in March 2012 US$10B) economic developments, among other benefits were beneficial to all Canadians…All of are recorded and documented of Dean & I have done as our contributions to Society and Canada, and with my parents, mother’s sisters & brothers..Uncle Bill Nipp had flat feet was a very fat boy and Uncle Philip Nipp was a baker needed in the home front helped feed the wartime public were disqualified to go to Pacific Theatre war.

(See Dean & Faye’s photos records letters documents)  we have contributed generously to all the Chinese pioneers & families, and to the Chinese Community, Society, Veterans & to all the Chinese Folks’ needs, includes Dean and I’ve personally guarantee and financed and helpedmany became multi-millionaires as Veteran Willie Chong & brothers, Sing Fung, Wong Kung Wai, Lee Family & others…that finances and credits then for the Chinese as also to women were extremely difficult as denied.
2012 Canada Day July 1st Celebrations hosted by Canada Government was one for the Chinese Community at Chinese Cultural Centre… I was invited to participate as they ‘honor me’ by many photographed me with many individuals at Canada Day celebration….One of the many photographers photographed me with different parties in each photos was Jane Feng. Then they seated me with few of the Chinese vets was the 1st photo by Jane Feng & several other photographers alongside her at the same time took photos of me.
Then other vets shown up wanted to be in one of the photo, they added chairs to be in the photo, there was at least 6-7 photographers wanted to photo me…This photo was to represent the Chinese Canadians celebrate together on Canada Day…was not a photo of the vets alone, but of all, as its one of the many photos many photographers has photo all of us!

Also as known, I’m one of the original charter associate member of Chinese Pacific Unit 280, has supported the Chinese Vets since World War ll… that I represented my 5 generations in our family all are born and raised Canadian Chinese proudly celebrate Canada Day with all happily.

This Canada Day Jane Feng also was after my stories of her store Jane’s Teas Shop at 41 East Pender Street, originally was, (as discriminated against the Chinese,) not allowed to be Pharmacists, caused my father Leong Chap Kwong with Dr. Philip Chu financed Chinese Pharmacist Yat Yee Samuel Lim opened & lived at the back, included a couple of social only mah jong tables, (for the Chef Yee Ka Jone of the famed industrialist Mr. Macmillan of Macmillan & Boedell Forestry lived at Anges Dr at Granville, and for other Chefs as Peter Bentleys’ etc enjoyment) operated the 1st Chinese Drug Store and school supplies at Jane Feng’s Tea Shop location …in Chinatown at 41 East Pender Street.. known as “Lucky Star Drug Store/”Fook Sing Yut Fong”.  Where she as aforesaid photographer also Exhibit her photos of the Chinese in business on her Pender Street block.

Lest we forget: The Chinese Boys/vets has suffered great hardships and denied of their work interests and education as we all has had suffered and endured tough times as the pioneers also as our parents gone through hard times…World War ll to some of the Chinese boys to be in the Army or Air Force was an opportunity to serve Canada and to have military experiences too.. Although risks life and death it was be in the Pacific Theatre…

The biggest concerns then, should the Second World War in the Orient did not ended as did, many of our Chinese boys would not returns as lack of time in training was rushed to the Pacific Theatre as needed, their oriental looks covered-up against the Japanese enemies.  My dear friend Veteran Rudy Carlson was in the Air Force with Quan Louie, brother of London Drugs Chairman Tong, Stock & Securities Tim, Electrical Engineer John, Insurance Willis, & in California Ken Louie flew his plane into the horizon was lost in action a week before the war ended..Now Canada Government “Honor him named a “Quan Louie Mountain” in B.C. interior north.  Rudy Carlson has donated his Air Force framed photograph with Quan Louie, their airplane, and squadron together to the Louie’s family whose in-turned donated to the Chinese Military Museum..

After the war enfranchisement many veterans were able to further their education enable entered universities for their chosen professions became lawyers, pharmacists, accountants, into businesses &  various professions previous denied. And the wives & children able to Canada join the Chinese pioneers after being nationalized Canadians…After WW2 lives changed in Canada!

Herein is part of my story; my parents, my dear husband Dean Chun Kwong Leung and I were involved, participated and as witnessed, are as I also know of and has shared happily with many of our dear vets friends & families in the various activities I dearly valued forever remember, love and appreciate our long friendship happiness!
God Bless You All  with Warmest Best Wishes!!

Faye answered fondly: "Bing Wong skipped classes; "Play Hooky" when the Chinese School Bell ring classes started he amongst others boys tell his parents he's to Chinese School, but took off play in the streets the "bam/bam" boys kicks the magnets with feathers to win against each other's fun! So mothers thought their sons were educated in Chinese, able to speak some? no read & write as taught were not learnt when you "play hooky" no attend classes!! Fun eh!!
